I've been trying to get Galileo's Telescope behind the altar at the church in Famagusta, and to no avail. I have the correct R level (R6), I've started the astronomy skill quest from St. Petersburg.
Any suggestions?

Buy one from a company shop. Best are capital cities shops.
It’s quite a rare drop. I recall it took me ages first time I went for one.
If you are getting Turbans and Pipes then you’re in the right spot.
Easiest is to buy just as @purplepirate said.
