Adding improvements is a different button at the shipyard. Was your improvement a regular mod or an overmod? And what rank sb are you?
One thong that happens to many people is that they accidentally sell their ship because the 'sell ship' is right next to the 'change ship' button so in a rush in sb sometimes people click wrong one. I did that back on gama server when i accidentally sold my clipper ship. I was land locked for a couple days since i hadn't finished my battleship yet but a friend loaned me a temp ship tp use until i could replace mine. I thing they added more steps now when selling to make sure it what you want to to since many people complained.
