What are the requirements for Americans renting a car in Germany?

Finally booked my flight to Europe after years of putting it off. Gonna start in Germany since I keep hearing it's amazing and I want to be able to go wherever without being locked into someone else's schedule. What do Americans need to rent a car over there? Any specific paperwork or requirements? And where should I even look to pick one up?

  • You're in for a good time, Germany works perfectly for this kind of trip. Just the Autobahn experience makes it worthwhile, and you've got total freedom to head wherever looks interesting without being locked down. You'll need your standard US driver's license and passport, plus pick up an international driving permit through AAA before flying out, whole thing takes about twenty minutes. Most rental spots require you to be 25, younger than that and they'll hit you with extra charges.

  • There's a ton to check out in Germany so you'll be driving a fair bit to see it all. Medieval castles, little villages, mountains down south, no way you're hitting everything from one base. Your own car changes the game when you're packing that much into a trip. For an American renting a car in Germany it helps to look at your choices online beforehand. And you can get behind the wheel right when you touch down and use every minute of your trip.
