As for guides, you can get some on papaya main page for UWO and you can click at the bottom of thw forums page 'uwo archived forum' which will take you to thw old forum. Once there go to captain"s log forum which contains many player made guides of all parts of the game.
If you want an offline game that's similar to this, you can look into Uncharted Ocean. It's not as big or as epic feeling as this game but it's good for a fun romp that offers similar theme.
